The last days of peace in Serbia, before the April breakdown in 1941. Group petty thieves wanders disguised as a musical composition "Balkan Express". The only concern of these pickpockets is to preserve the head of the first winds of war atrocities. People at the bottom, in that terrible and merciless time, grow out of their hitherto meaningless destinies and become heroes of an era.
